circular form, spot-hammered decoration, initialled 'A' beneath an Earl's coronet, numbered 1, 10, 22 and 24, the first plate inscribed to the underside 'This set of 24 Silver Gilt Dessert Plates was hand beaten and gilded by Alice Amherst as a gift to her husband William Archer, 3rd Earl Amherst in 1900 to be an Heirloom', diameter 22cm, approx. weight 27.9oz. (4)

Provenance: A Private Collection.
Alice Amherst (September 1854 - 27th April 1933) married her second husband William Archer Amherst, 3rd Earl Amherst, on 25th September 1889, and registered her hallmark with the London Assay Office in April 1900. Between 1902 and 1904, she made a second, similar, set of eighteen plates for her brother-in-law Henry, 6th Earl of Lisburne from her first marriage to the 5th Earl of Lisburne. This second set was sold at Christie's, London, 11th May 1994.
