Day Two of the sale on 31st January starts with silver from a Private Collection. The collection comprises over 100 lots, mainly focussing on items of vertu and tea-related silver. Early silver spoons have been a feature of our silver auctions, and the January sale is no exception. A particular highlight of the collection is a matched set of six Elizabeth I silver Lion Sejant spoons, by Nicholas Bartholomew, five 1578, one 1558.
Also included on Day Two of the sale is a silver beaker by modern silversmith Hiroshi Suzuki, ‘Aqua Poesy Dom’, London 2006. Born in Japan in 1961, Suzuki completed an MA at Mulashino Art University in Tokyo in 1993, before coming to the UK to study English and explore museums. In 1994 he enrolled at Camberwell College of Art and later the Royal College of Art. His work is now represented in major collections and museums around the world.
Day One, on 30th January, will comprise 400 lots and includes a private collection of Maltese silver with the highlight being an early-18th century Maltese silver coffee pot, Antonio Manoel de Vilhena period (1722-1736), maker's mark of FA probably for Francesco Assenza. Estimate £8000-12,000.
To be sold on Day One is part 1 of The Dr W.E.C Gillham Collection of Channel Islands Silver. Dr William Gillham, an educational psychologist and prolific author, was also a passionate collector of Channel Islands silver. Purchased over several decades, he built up a substantial representative collection, including some very rare and early pieces.
