λAn early 18th century silver and tortoiseshell paint box,

maker's mark only T.P with a pellet above, circa 1725,

rectangular form, the hinged tortoiseshell cover carved with the Temple of Four Winds, Castle Howard, and with the initials J.V, probably for John Vanbrugh, the interior with a hinged pallet, and hinged cover which opens to reveal six paint compartments, length 8.2cm.

Sir John Vanbrugh (1664-1726) was a noted architect. His most famous designs were Castle Howard (1701), The Haymarket theatre (1705) and Blenheim Palace (1705). The Temple of four Winds was built between 1724-1726.
