We are delighted to present our Silver & Objects of Vertu Autumn sale, taking place on Tuesday 22nd & Wednesday 23rd October 2024.
Day Two of our sale features a small Private Collection of Early Silver, including tankards & flagons. Leading the collection is a Charles II silver flagon, made by Thomas Smith in London circa 1681. Examples of Smith’s work can be found in the Minneapolis Institute of Art and the Inner Temple, London. The flagon last appeared on the open market in November 1968, where it was sold on behalf of the Rector and Churchwardens of St. Mary Newington at Sotheby’s. It sold then for £3,800 and was bought by renowned London dealer S.J. Phillips. Other highlights from the collection include a smaller Charles I silver flagon, probably made by Robert Gregory, in London 1635 (lot 920), and a selection of tankards, including a Charles II silver tankard (lot 915), and a William and Mary silver tankard (lot 916).
Included elsewhere in Day Two is an Omar Ramsden, an Arts and Crafts silver cigarette casket, which was exhibited at Omar Ramsden 1873-1939, Centenary Exhibition of Silver, City Museum and Art Gallery, in Birmingham in 1973 (lot 753), a fine matched set of four late-Victorian and Edwardian silver-gilt baskets (lot 749) and a pair of Victorian silver figural salt cellars (lot 857).
