Our December sale features over 450 lots of 20th-century and contemporary art. Amongst the highlights are four works by Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell and George Leslie Hunter (lots 94-97), two of the four artists collectively known as The Scottish Colourists. These artists drew influences from the Paris avant-garde and revolutionised Scottish painting in the early 20th Century. From the same private collection comes a landscape by John Maclauchlan Milne (lot 98), often referred to as ‘The Fifth Scottish Colourist’. Continuing the Scottish theme, the sale also includes works by Edward Atkinson Hornel (lot 42) and Craigie Aitchison (lot 315).
The artist Robert Bevan once wrote, ‘I see the Chilterns quite differently since John Nash started painting them,’ and Nash’s Winter in a Beechwood (lot 101) is a fine example of his landscapes, personally selected by him for the 1967 retrospective of his work held at the Royal Academy. Other highlights include works by Alfred Munnings (lot 1), Mary Fedden (lots 195-196), Edward Seago (lots 250-251), and John Piper (lots 228-229). The sculpture section includes four works by Jonathan Kenworthy (lots 359-362), who has been described as ‘one of England’s most remarkable sculptors’.
