Sir John Boys fought for Charles I from the beginning of the Civil War, and was Governor of Donnington Castle. He spent the Interregnum attempting to organise uprisings against Cromwell, and was rewarded for his loyalty on the Restoration with the office of Receiver of Customs at Dover.
