Arabia Infelix

Inscribed Arabia Infelix (lower centre)

Pencil and watercolour within pencil framing lines

19.3 x 17.3cm

Provenance:

Siegfried Sassoon;

And by family descent

This work probably depicts T. E. Lawrence (1888-1935), known as Lawrence of Arabia. Lawrence wrote an introduction to George Wyman Bury's book 'Arabia Infelix', and was a great friend of Siegfried Sassoon. They first met just before the First World War, and they shared a strong mutual regard for each other's literary output. Lawrence was one of only five friends Sassoon invited to his wedding.
