A scarce English flintlock double rifle of approximately .700 calibre by H.W. Mortimer, browned twist barrels 22.5 in., the left barrel inscribed 'H. W. MORTIMER LONDON' and the right 'GUN MAKER TO HIS MAJESTY', hollow top rib with low profile fore sight, gold lined pans and vents, London Company proof; lock plates with bell husk engraved borders and each inscribed 'H. W. Mortimer' and with personal crests of big-cat heads, engraved swan necked cocks, roller bearings in the heels of the frizzens; walnut half stock with steel furniture, scrolling trigger guard, patch box with sliding cover (restored), steel-tipped wooden ramrod; some refinishing including later chequering to the fore stock and wrist and re-blueing of the tang. Section 58(2) - no licence required if possessed as a curiosity or ornament.
