Westley Richards: a .451 'Monkey-Tail' capping breech-loading cavalry carbine, serial number 288, barrel 20 in. (to hinge of breech block), tangent/ladder back sight, barrel marked 'WHITWORTH'S PATENT' in front of back sight, hinged breech marked 'WESTLEY RICHARDS PATENT', plain lock marked 'WESTLEY RICHARDS & Co' and dated 1860, walnut full stock with steel furniture including saddle ring, steel ram rod, cleaning tool to the butt trap; in a fitted wooden transit box (see amended footnote) with manufacturer's instruction papers to the inside of the lid. top of box with painted name 'H. F. TWYNAM 3RD Dragoon Gds'. Section 58(2) - no licence required if possessed as a curiosity or ornament.
Note: This rifle was previously sold without a case, and of Twynham's case, although he right type, must be regarded as associated. Henry Frederick Twynam was made Cornet by purchase in the 3rd (Prince of Wales's) Dragoon Guards 6th November 1863, having resigned a commission in the Middlesex Artillery Volunteer Corps. He was appointed Instructor of Musketry at the Cavalry Depot in Canterbury in 1864, and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1866. He retired in 1869 and passed away on the Isle of Wight in 1903.
