Notable as the first medal that the collector acquired.

Born in Town Malling, Kent, in 1824. Served as an Ordinary Seaman in HMS Trafalgar from June 1846. Subsequently served in HMS Southampton, Highflyer and Maeander. Served in HMS Algiers May 1854 to February 1856, becoming a Leading Seaman 11/06/54 and Captain of the Mizzen Tops 17/07/55.
