Born in 1871 in Essex and worked as a labourer before joining the R.A. in February 1889. Servied in Gibraltar, Aden and India, and awarded the L.S.G.C. Medal in 1907, before being discharged, on completion of his 21 year term of service, in 1910. Recalled from the reserve in September 1914, and awarded the M.S.M. in 1917 "for valuable services rendered with the Armies in the Field" in France. Offered with research.
