A Queen's South Africa Medal 1899-1902 to Private John Mullen, Liverpool Regiment Mounted Infantry, second type, 4 clasps: Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal, South Africa 1902 (7203 PTE J. MULLEN. L'POOL REGT M.I.), very fine.

Attested in Warrington 25/10/1900 and attended mounted infantry training at Aldershot before serving in South Africa. Sentenced to hard labour for falling asleep at his post. Re-engaged in 1912 following a period in the Reserve, and entered France 12/08/1914. Suffered a shell wound which necessitated the amputation of his right leg, and discharged as "no longer physically fit for war service" in June 1915. nb 'Mullen' and 'Mullins' used interchangeably on service documents.
