A rare French uniform sword of the École de Mars
A rare French uniform sword of the École de Mars, c. 1794, double edged blade 20.5 in., stylised cast brass hilt, angular langets with Phrygian caps in relief, drooping quillons and angular knuckle bow of iron, wooden scabbard bound in brass (incomplete chape).
Designed for the pupils of the short lived revolutionary military college, the École de Mars (formed and disbanded in 1794), by the neoclassical painter Jacques-Louis David.
