Spain: Cross for the Defence of Madrid 1808
Spain: Cross for the Defence of Madrid 1808, gilt and enamelled eight pointed cross, 41 mm, flames to the angles between the arms, obverse with central oval displaying an arm holding a sword and the legend 'AL VALOR Y FIDELIDAD DE MADRID', suspension with modified crown, minor loss to enamel, good very fine or better.
Instituted in 1817 the design of this award mimicked that of an earlier French cross issued to suspected Spanish collaborators who's property had been burned by their compatriots.
