A fine 17th century chiselled steel double shell guard for a smallsword or transitional rapier, the face decorated in high undercut relief with a cavalry battle, the horses galloping and rearing, some falling under the hooves of others, the troopers exchanging blows, the details undercut to the extent that many limbs are free of the background; the inner face carved in lower relief with a scene in camp before a town, with tents, and with foot soldiers gathering beneath two large banners, all within a rope twist border.
