An Austrian model 1869 cavalry officer's sword, blade 32.75 in., of asymmetrical cross-section with fuller to one side only, marked for Robert Hermes of Solingen; iron guard pierced and engraved in a 'honeysuckle' pattern, plain backstrap with ears and dove's head pommel, wire bound shagreen grip; steel scabbard of non-standard pattern, two loose rings, marked 'W.R.B.C. 45' at the throat and with '190316' stamped on the shoe and struck through.
