A family group of three Memorial Plaques commemorating Lieutenant Colonel A. E. E. Lowry
A family group of three Memorial Plaques commemorating Lieutenant Colonel A. E. E. Lowry, DSO, MC, West Yorkshire Regiment, and his two brothers, the sons of William Buchanan and Annie Sophia Lowry of Bournemouth:
2nd Lieutenant William Augustine Harper Lowry, India Army Reserve of Officers, was killed in action on the 4th June 1915, at the 3rd Battle of Krithia during the Gallipoli campaign. He was aged 25 years and serving with the 14th King George's Own Ferozepore Sikhs, which battalion was almost wiped out in the battle, loosing 80% of its officers.
Lt. Col. Auriol Ernest Eric Lowry, 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in France on the 23rd September 1918, aged 25 years, by a machine gun bullet, while visiting the battalion outposts. He had previously been awarded the Military Cross (L.G. 14/01/1916), the Distinguished Service Order (L.G. 26/07/1918), and the French Croix de Guerre with palms. He had served throughout the war on the Western Front and qualified for the 1914 Star. His D.S.O. citation describes his leadership in "many days of very fierce fighting...[and] counter attacks against overwhelming odds" his force being completely surrounded "he cut his way out, being personally the last to cover the withdrawal" He was then captured but made a hazardous escape, and the citation concludes "His fortitude and indomitable courage throughout a memorable twelve days were beyond all praise". The period in question was in late March 1918, in the area of Eterpigny and Rosiers, and it was during this time of intense fighting that Auriol's younger brother Cyril was killed.
Captain Cyril John Patrick Lowry, also 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment, was killed in action in France on the 25th March 1918, aged 20 years. Most poignantly the battalion war diary is endorsed by his elder brother Auriol, and it describes the incident (a counter attack into machine gun and rifle fire as the enemy were crossing a bridge), and later lists Cyril among the dead.
Mounted together in a wooden shield, good very fine and better.
