After a promising start the recipient went through a troubled period in the late 1880s, with some time spent in cells. By 1891, however his conduct was again being assessed as 'Good' and 'Very Good', and he was transferred to H.M.A. Widgeon 15th September 1893, taking part in riverine expeditions in West Africa. He was finally discharged in May 1906.
