We are delighted to announce our summer sale of Fine Jewellery, to be held across two days in Salisbury on July 10th/11th.
Day one (10th July) commences with a great selection of modern and vintage handbags and accessories by hugely collectible houses like Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, before moving on to a fascinating selection of jewels and watches. Among the highlights are a noble family collection of mourning jewels from the estate of the late Lady Katherine Lambart, including an ecclesiastical sapphire ring bearing the arms of the pope who famously clashed with Napoleon Bonaparte, Pius VII (1742-1823). Additional highlights include an important ‘Holloway Prison’ brooch commemorating the fight for Women’s Suffrage (309), and a gold pocket watch with a deep connection to our home city of Salisbury, belonging to the artist and decorative genius Rex Whistler (1905-44), gifted to his brother, the gifted glass engraved Laurence Whistler (1912-2000) before his untimely death in World War II, incorporated into an exhibition of Rex Whistler’s work at Salisbury Museum.
Day two (11th July) is headlined by a trio of contemporary jewels including a superb and strikingly modern pair of natural pearl and diamond earrings (711, our cover lot), a great cultured pearl and diamond necklace by Swiss jewellers Adler (659) and a beautifully limpid ‘no-oil’ emerald ring (658). However, a wonderful selection of antique jewellery throughout the sale also spans the course of jewellery history, from ancient Roman glyptics to excellent examples of Georgian and Victorian jewellery including a diamond tiara (lot 677). The 20th century remains a literal goldmine of jewellery design, with beautiful Edwardian jewels including a natural pearl necklace (709) and a fine garland style diamond pendant/brooch (710) showcasing the refinement of the Belle Epoque, to a number of stylish Art Deco jewels highlighted by a ruby and diamond kingfisher brooch (lot 688). Fans of bold mid-century jewels will be delighted by a superb ‘Reflection’ brooch in emeralds and diamonds by Trabert-Hoeffer Mauboussin (676), as well as later jewels by Grima and Alan Gard, and an original 1970s Cartier ‘LOVE’ bangle bearing the signature of its brilliant designer, Aldo Cipullo (636).
