We are delighted to be offering a private collection of 100 early 19th century intaglios, 98 of which are from the collection of Prince Stanislas Poniatowski. Typically the majority of the glyptics are carnelian but also include sardonyx, amethyst and chalcedony examples. The collection was purchased from Collingwood in 1973 who compiled a catalogue detailing each gem and commissioned electrotypes for every one. It is the largest collection of ‘Poniatowski’s’ to be sold since the mid 19th century. The 100 intaglios will be offered together as lot 528.
Also included in the auction, Lot 501 is a magnificent diamond 'cluster' necklace by Harry Winston. Created in the 1940's, the original cluster motif was inspired by the lush greenery of a holly wreath at Harry Winston's Scarsdale estate. With its quintessentially sculptural form designed to capture light from all directions, the 'Winston Cluster' has evolved as the House's iconic signature style.
Other items featured in the sale are a Cartier gold zodiac pendant, a Chaumet Art Deco brooch, a pair of diamond scroll earrings by René Boivin (with no reserve), and a selection of diamond rings, coloured stones and glyptics.

Some lots are accompanied by gemmological certificates which give an opinion on some or all of the gem stones included in that particular lot. These certificates may have been obtained by Woolley & Wallis or supplied by vendors. It is important to note that the content of these certificates is not guaranteed by Woolley & Wallis and we cannot be held responsible for any disagreement over the content of certificates after the sale, or for a retrospective change in opinion by the providers of any of the certificates.
Not all images are life-sized, weights and measurements in the catalogue are approximate only.
It is common practice for coloured stones including jade to be treated to enhance their appearance. This includes jade that has been bleached (usually in acid), polymer/resin filled or dyed, or a combination of any of these treatments.
Prospective buyers should presume that all coloured stones sold by Woolley & Wallis have been treated unless stated to the contrary in the catalogue description.
Please contact the department for more information regarding enhancement and treatment of coloured stones, and for condition reports which are available on single item lots.
Items described as 'seed pearls' have not been tested and cannot be guaranteed as natural pearls.
Any dispute as to the authenticity of a lot, including signatures, age and condition, and as to the treatment of gem stones including pearls and HTHP enhanced diamonds, must be brought to the attention of Woolley & Wallis within two weeks of the sale date.
Please note that Woolley & Wallis do not guarantee the working order of mechanical movements at the point of sale and beyond.
