AN UNUSUAL JAPANESE NEGORO LACQUERED WOOD TONKOTSU
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The tobacco box carved as two men wrestling, both kneeling and grasping each other at the waist, each wearing a red lacquer kimono and with their eyes inlaid, their heads forming the lid, 9cm.
Provenance: formerly the collection of Sir Sydney Richard Wells, 1st Baronet, D.L., M.P. for Bedford (1879-1957) of Felmersham Grange, Bedfordshire, and thence by descent.
