A JAPANESE BIZEN STONEWARE WALL VASE

EDO OR MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY

Modelled as a farmer being attacked by four monkeys, the primates attempting to steal his basket of peaches, the man holding on to his straw hat while crying out in surprise, with details picked out in red and gilt, the base with a paper label in French reading 'Taken by Alfred Eyben, born in Anvers 19.12.1834, from the Siege of Shanghai, sailor on board the French warship Jeanne d'Arc with Captain Gambard, 1856', 21cm.

The wooden frigate Jeanne d'Arc had 42 canons and was active between 1852-1898. It took part in the bombing of Shanghai on 6th January 1855.
