A JAPANESE KAKIEMON TEAPOT AND COVER
EDO PERIOD, C.1670-90
With a lobed decagonal body decorated in red, cyan, dark blue and black enamels, elegantly painted to each side with a flowering prunus tree issuing from rockwork under scrolling clouds, the lid with similar decoration, the spout and handle with karakusa scrolls in black and cyan, the base with a paper collection label number no.16, 14.5cm. The author explains that the small dimensions of this type of teapots reflect how precious and expensive tea was at the end of the 17th century.
