A JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE OF A FROG
A JAPANESE WOOD NETSUKE OF A FROG
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The large amphibian depicted crouching with its head slightly turned to the left, its bulging eyes inlaid, the warts and bumps on its skin realistically rendered in ukibori, a two-character signature for Sukeyuki in a rectangular cartouche underneath, 4.7cm.
Cf. G Lazarnick, Netsuke & Inro Artists, and How to Read Their Signatures, vol.II, p.1052, for an example of a frog netsuke by Sukeyuki, possibly this very piece.
