A PAIR OF JAPANESE BRONZE QUAILS BY ATSUYOSHI FOR THE MARUKI COMPANY
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The two plump birds realistically depicted standing, one sleeping with its beak buried in its breast feathers, the other with its head slightly turned to the left, each signed underneath Atsuyoshi saku and Maruki sei, 10.3cm and 8cm. (2)
Provenance: from the collection of Colonel R B Cousens (1898-1943), acquired in Hong Kong in the 1930s.
