A VERY LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE SATSUMA VASE BY KAIZAN
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
The baluster body raised on a short flared foot, delicately painted in polychrome enamels and gilt with two large rectangular panels, one side with beauties and children in a mountainous river landscape, the figures wearing ornate garments and one holding an open fan inscribed Kyoto Kaizan; the reverse with many armour-clad warriors, one standing upright on a veranda and two others bowing before him; all reserved on a dark navy-blue ground embellished with complex brocade patterns, mon (family crests), stiff leaves, key fret, flowerheads and other formal designs, signed in a rectangular cartouche underneath Kaizan sei under the Shimazu mon, 45.5cm.
