The Japanese Works of Art sale will begin at 9.30am on Tuesday 17th May.
The Japanese Art sale on 17th May 2022 includes a large number of Japanese ceramics, ranging from 17th century porcelain (lot 5) to good examples of Kinkozan Satsuma and an unusual Makuzu Kozan tripod vase (lot 51) with delicate puce decoration. We are also delighted to offer pieces from Gas Kimishima (d.2020), the renowned potter who built traditional anagama kilns in Wales and England, and whose collection consists of many blue and white pieces and studio pottery.
Other highlights include two Edo period lacquer cabinets made for the European market (lots 125 and 126), both featuring intricate mother of pearl decoration; a large selection of exquisite metalworks, including a charming depiction of a cockatoo by Mitani (lot 239) and a very impressive okimono of a hawk (lot 236). Lots 141-204 are dedicated to woodblock prints, paper screens, paintings and other works on paper, and feature a selection of lots from the collection of David and Paula Newman, including a large archive (lot 157) with family pictures relating to Josiah Conder (1852-1920) and Kawanabe Kyōsai (1831-1889).
Following the sale of several Takashi Murakami (1962-) prints in our November 2021 auction, we are delighted to offer lot 203, a set of five skateboard decks featuring Murakami’s iconic design of smiling daisies.
The sale will end with a number of netsuke, inro and other sagemono, including several lots from the collection of Virginia G. Atchley (1911-2013), such as lot 249: a rare bamboo netsuke of a shishi by Morikawa Toen illustrated in her collection catalogue.
A section of the auction (lots 111-122) is dedicated to Korean arts, including lot 117: a Korean blue and white faceted jar formerly from Bluett, London. The Korean lots also include celadon bottle vases, maebyeong, other Korean pieces, and lot 120: an interesting minhwa four-fold hunting screen.
