A JAPANESE IVORY NETSUKE OF A RECUMBENT BOAR
MEIJI 1868-1912
The beast depicted resting with its mouth open revealing sharp teeth and tusks, the eyes inlaid in light horn and with darker pupils, with long grasses lying across its back, signed Rantei in an oval reserve and Hogen in another, 4.9cm.
Cf. F Meinertzhagen, The Meinertzhagen Card Index on Netsuke in the Archives of the British Museum, Part B, where a comparable netsuke of a boar signed Rantei is illustrated.
