MEIJI 1868-1912

Carved as the severed head of a Nio, the Buddhist guardian king with a ferocious expression, frowning and with his mouth open, unsigned, 4cm.

This netsuke may be inspired by the famous pair of Nio at Todaiji Temple in Nara dating from the 12th century.
