A MASSIVE JAPANESE ARITA BLUE AND WHITE DISH

EDO 1603-1868

The rim typically painted with panels in kraak style enclosing alternating motifs of peonies, auspicious symbols and stylised jewels, the well densely decorated with pomegranates and finger citrons amongst leaves and branches, the underside with spur marks, 55cm.

Cf. S Jenyns, Japanese Porcelain, fig.16A for a closely related dish described as from the Sarugawa Kiln and dating from the Manji/Tenwa period (1658-1683).
