A VERY LARGE AND IMPRESSIVE SATSUMA VASE BY KINKOZAN
MEIJI 1868-1912
The baluster body finely painted in enamels and gilt with two large rectangular panels, with a peacock and peahen to one side walking amongst magnolia and wild flowers; a raft of thirteen ducks to the other side, with branches of flowering prunus and a couple of tits in flight above, the panels on a dark navy-blue ground with a dense pattern of stylised ginkgo leaves and brocade designs in gilt, the neck with formal roundels of birds and flowers enclosed between shippo-tsunagi (jewelled cash), the lip with flowerheads between wave motifs and with a band of geometrical lappets above the foot, the base signed Kinkozan zo, 46cm.
The very large dimensions of this vase suggest that it may have been made as a special commission or possibly for an international exhibition.
