The square lid decorated with a large ho-ho bird in flight over paulownia leaves and flowers, surrounded by a band of key fret, the incised decoration picked with polychrome enamels, the body left undecorated, with a six character mark to the base and import marks for London 1976, 3.2cm x 8.9cm x 8.9cm, 357g. Provenance: Given by the Meiji Government to Prof Francis Elgar FRS FRSE LLD (1845-1909), naval architect and British Adviser to the Japanese Navy in the 1870s, by repute.
