Japanese Works of Art

Tuesday 12th November 2024. Starts at 14:30pm

The Japanese Works of Art sale on 12th November includes a selection of over 60 netsuke and other sagemono, many from the collection of Mark and Elizabeth Harding of Kimberley, South Africa. One of the highlights is lot 406, the Gama Sennin by Naito Toyomasa (1773-1856), previously in the collection of Raymond and Frances Bushell, illustrated in Bushell’s 'The Wonderful World of Netsuke', and in Barry Davies’s ‘Netsuke Classics’. Other netsuke and inro in the sale come with further provenance, such as the Behrens Collection.

The ceramics section notably features pieces from the collection of the 9th Marquis of Waterford of Curraghmore, County Waterford, Ireland. These include a rare pair of Hampton Court jars (lot 303) and another single example (lot 302), all three brightly decorated in polychrome enamels with vivid flowers and karakusa scrolls. Lot 301 is also particularly interesting: the pair of brightly-enamelled models of fish are a rare example, and originally come from the collection of Anne and Gordon Getty.

The auction will also offer a good selection of lacquer, metalworks and works on paper. For more information about the sale or to request a catalogue, please contact Alexandra Aguilar at aa@woolleys.live .
