TWO JAPANESE WAR HATS, JINGASA
EDO PERIOD, 17TH CENTURY
One lacquered, the surface a deep chocolate-brown colour, the edge with gold lacquer and the underside red, a gilt mon depicting a stylised wisteria flower painted to the front and topped with a foliate finial, the underside with padding and straps, the other hat constructed of fourteen iron plates and with a single circle painted to the front, 31cm and 35cm dia. respectively. This mon is often used by families with the character for wisteria (to/fuji) in their name, such as Fujiwara or Kato.
