A LARGE JAPANESE SATSUMA DISH
MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY
Shaped as an abalone shell, the well painted with five Immortals and a boy engaged in scholarly pursuits, raised on seashell-shaped feet, together with an incense burner, koro, moulded as an ovoid box bundled up in a cloth, with fan-shaped panels of flowers, landscapes and figures on a dense background of flowerheads and sparrows in flight, the rims with brocade designs, 31.5cm and 10.5cm respectively.
