A LARGE JAPANESE SATSUMA DISH AND A BOWL

MEIJI PERIOD, 19TH CENTURY

The plate decorated with beauties and children in a mountainous river landscape, with men transporting goods at the back and torii gates trailing in the distance, the base signed Setsuzan, the bowl painted with a central panel of a seated bijin reading to other beauties and children around her, with thatched huts to the back and Mount Fuji in the distance, the cavetto with dense patterns of brocade designs and flowers, the underside richly decorated in gilt on the deep navy-blue ground, signed Dai Nihon Ryokuzan zo in an incense burner-shaped cartouche, 30.5cm max. (2)
