Our two day Summer auction on the 29^th and 30^th June will feature over seven hundred lots of antique furniture, lighting, sculpture, clocks, works of art and carpets and rugs. The undoubted highlight is lot 507 ‘The Gregson House’ an early Victorian cupboard doll’s house. In remarkably good condition for its age, it retains the majority of its original fittings. It was commissioned and furnished by Miss Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Wilkinson of Aston Hall, Birmingham. Her sister Mary Ann Boulton tragically died in childbirth in 1829, leaving seven children and a new born baby girl, who was also named Mary. It was this tragedy that precipitated the creation of this wonderful doll’s house to help her little nieces and nephews recover from the great sadness. It remained in the same family until 2010 when it was sold by private treaty to the present vendor, a family friend.

Day one of the sale will kick off with one hundred and twenty-one lots from Redlynch House, a fine period property based in Redlynch on the edge of the New Forest. It was built in the early 19^th century and subsequently acquired by Rev. William Nelson, 1^st Earl Nelson, the elder brother of Admiral Horatio of nearby Trafalgar Park, for his son-in-law Samuel Hood, 2^nd Baron Bridport. The wide ranging contents include good French and Continental furniture and clocks, including: a Louis XVI secretaire a abattant by Francois Bayer (lot 49), Grand Tour bronzes (lots 77-81), a Limoges enamel plaque in the manner of Pierre Reymond (lot 84) and a pair of portrait miniatures of Napoleon and Marie Louise in a pietra dura frame (lot 55).

Other highlights of the sale include a large Westphalian oak chest or Stollentruhe (lot 157), a fine pair of Anglo-Chinese padouk armchairs (lot 526) and two lots formerly the property of Sir John Gooch Bt. of Benacre Hall, Suffolk. Lot 269, a pair of George II walnut stools and lot 396, a pair of Charles X ormolu, porphyry and cut-glass vases both were originally sold by Sotheby’s at the famous sale of the contents of Benacre Hall in May 2000.  

The sale will be held on Wednesday 29th and Thursday 30th June 2022 at our Castle Street Salerooms.

Viewing will be held on Saturday 25th, Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June at our Castle Gate offices in our top floor viewing gallery. Parking is available.
