the brass eight day five pillar movement with anchor escapement, with internal countwheel and striking on a bell, the 11in brass dial with a silvered chapter ring with black Roman numerals interspersed with foliate motifs and Arabic minutes and inscribed 'J WINDMILLS LONDON', with a matted centre and a subsidiary seconds dial and date aperture inside winged cherub mask spandrels, the hood with a moulded cornice above a blind fretwork frieze and a square glazed door flanked by slightly swollen columns with brass capitals and feet, the trunk door with three marquetry panels of figures and birds amongst scrolling, flowering foliage and a circular lenticle with a brass bezel, inside a chevron inlaid band, the base with a further marquetry panel and wavy apron foot, with weights and pendulum

Joseph Windmills was an esteemed maker and was made free of the Clockmakers' Company in 1671 and became master in 1702. He was in partnership with his son Thomas and they were based in Tower Street, London.
