A William & Mary walnut and marquetry longcase clock by Thomas Johnson, the brass eight day movement with four turned and finned pillars, with recoil anchor escapement and internal countwheeel with strike to bell, the 11in dial with gilt cast boys and crown spandrels, with a silvered chapter ring with Roman and Arabic numerals, the matted centre with a subsidiary seconds dial and engraved date aperture, with ringed winding holes, signed 'Thos Johnson London' to the lower edge of the dial, the case with a caddy top inlaid with flowers with three giltwood ball finials, above a fret carved frieze and columns, above floral and leafage borders, the trunk door inlaid with birds, flowers and naked winged figures with a glass lenticle, with a conforming plinth and flattened disc feet, 238cm high.
Thomas Johnson is listed in Brian Loomes' The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain, with several longcases known dating from 1680-1705. In 1701 a clockmaker Thomas Johnson was listed as living in Southwark.
