An early 19th century mahogany wall timepiece by James McCabe, the brass eight day single chain fusee movement, with a lever platform escapement, with four turned pillars, the backplate and rear of dial signed and numbered, with a 5 1/2in dial silvered dial with Roman numerals and slow/fast lever, signed 'Jas McCabe ROYAL EXCHANGE, LONDON, No. 2502', in a mahogany case, 20.2cm diameter.
James McCabe Snr founded his business in 1778 based in Fleet Street and then at 97 Cornhill, Royal Exchange. He produced fine clocks, chronometers and watches, he died in 1811 with his son James Jnr succeeding him. James Jnr was apprenticed to Reid and Auld of Edinburgh. In 1838 the Royal Exchange was destroyed by fire and the business moved to 32 Cornhill.
