Catalogue Note
The partnership of Howell and James was founded in 1819, they were originally silk merchants and retail jewellers. They exhibited at the Great Exhibition in 1851 and the International Exhibition of 1862 to great acclaim. On the back of the successful exhibitions they opened further display rooms at their premises on Regent Streey in 1860. In 1884 the business was dissolved and it became a limited company and finally closed in 1911.
