John Christian Maggs of Bath (1819-1895). A three quarter length portrait, of the master Mason John Dell Esq, the reverse inscribed 'John Dell Esq.' and 'J.C.Maggs fecit 1841', oil on canvas, 28 x 20in (71 x 51cm).
John Christian (Charles) Maggs is well known for his coaching scenes and depictions of public houses. His most popular paintings were those that depict the arrival of the Royal Mail coach in the Victorian English village. Maggs also ran a painting school in Bath to which city his name is often associated. He had many patrons of whom Queen Victoria was one.
