A GILT BRASS AND SILVER INLAID BOWL
IN MAMLUK STYLE, EGYPT, LATE 19TH CENTURY
with gadrooned decoration to the rim above inlaid panels of script interspersed with floral cartouches embellished with chased decoration, between bands of scrolling floral decoration, on a ground with the remains of gilding, the underside with a short engraved inscription
10.2cm high, 22cm diameter

Field Marshal Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (1850-1916) and thence by descent.
Catalogue Note
The British Museum holds several of this style of bowl each with silver inlay of Arabic script interspersed with flowers and foliage of various kinds. Many of the descriptions given by the museum also make reference to inlaid panels of 'black organic material. The lot being offered here also has small rondels of 'black' material in the scrolling foliate bands which have been further embellished with engraved geometric decoration.
