Day 2 will feature a number of collections including: the Adler Collection of Treen (lots 358-409), which comprises of over fifty lots of wooden carvings, boxes, miniature furniture and bygones. Lovingly assembled with an expert eye for colour and patination the highlight is lot 392 a wonderful Charles II lignum vitae wassail bowl. The sale also features other interesting items of treen with some rare snuff boxes including: a Scottish Folk Art table snuff box attributed to the Blind Man of Glasgow (lot 426).
The sale will also feature over 40 lots from the Phillip Allen Collection with a good selection of samplers, carvings and collectables. We are delighted to be selling items formerly from the collection of Lord Kitchener of Khartoum (lots 659-678) with a very good Zanzibar chest and three finely turned rhinoceros horn drinking cups.
The highlight of the Sculpture and Grand Tour section is a fine French bronze of the Dying Gladiator after Pierre Julien (lot 645). The original marble version was exhibited at the Salon in 1779 to great acclaim and bronze versions are very rare. Other rarities in the sale include: a Regency rosewood library table in the manner of George Bullock (lot 515), an extremely rare pack of late 17th century playing cards by C. Hewson (lot 565) and a very interesting New Zealand parquetry specimen table by Anton Seuffert (lot 719).
