Day 1 of our April Furniture, Works of Art & Clocks sale has almost 300 lots of early oak and country furniture, folk art, 18th century English and Irish furniture, tapestries, clocks and garden ornaments. We are excited to be selling two Danish Christian IV Royal chests dating from ‘1608’ (lots 79 and 80). These rare survivors from the early 17th century were featured in the ‘Christian IV and Europe Exhibition’ in 1988. In the exhibition catalogue the curators speculated that the chests may have contained gifts from Christian IV for James I.
The Oak section of the sale includes a collection of country furniture collected during the 1970s-80s from some of the top dealers of the day including Jellinek & Sampson and Csaky’s Antiques, the highlights of the collection are a painted George III lambing chair (lot 119) and a wonderful oak vernacular bench with a ‘butcher’s block’ seat (lot 114).
Highlights of 18th century furniture include: a George III serving table and a pair of giltwood armchairs in the manner of Mayhew & Ince (lots 212 and 213) consigned from an Irish Country House, a rare set of George III padouk hanging shelves, (lot 217) and a beautiful pair of early George III giltwood wall mirrors (lot 220) which have been in the same collection since 1969 when they were purchased from Fernandes & Marche Antiques for £1,225!
