Continuing the theme of Private Collections, Day 2 commences with The Selected Contents of Glen House, Bruton. Built up by discerning collectors over a number of decades, buying from well-known antiques dealers and galleries, highlights include lot 551, a documentary George III Goncalo Alves serpentine chest of drawers by John Teague of Cornwall, lot 543, a French Giltwood Canape once owned by Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh and a rare 18th century Italian Cap I Pota or processional figure.
The sale continues with a selection of items from the Robin and Rupert Hambro Collection, featuring lot 580, a pair of Italian Renaissance Revival Carved and Stained Pine Ornamental Urns and lot 588, a George II Console Table in the manner of Mathias Lock.
Lots 847 to 856 are a collection of butterflies, moths and other insects from the Rothschild’s Exbury House, Hampshire. Collected from around the world by Edmund de Rothschild in the first half of the 20th century, it is mainly housed in a selection of collector’s cabinets, and features attractive specimens including morphos, swallowtails, dragonflies and scorpions
We are also delighted to offer private collections of tea caddies and snuff boxes, both collections showcasing the wide variety of styles these collectable objects come in.
Elsewhere, lot 627, a rare scrimshaw horn beaker of anti-slavery interest, is a highlight. Not only is it ‘Anti-Slavery’ but is also features a female slave beneath the slogan ‘Am I Not A Woman and a Sister’ and references not just the abolition of slavery but also the questionable introduction of ‘apprenticeships’ as a replacement practise. Lot 745 is a fine Dutch Verre Eglomise Gold and Silver Reverse Engraved Picture on Glass by Jonas Zeuner. Dating to the late 18th century, and signed to the lower edge, the picture features a duck shoot over a lake using an unusual and attractive combination of gilding and silvering with painted highlights. A Tunbridge Ware Table made by William Fenner for Princess, later Queen, Victoria inlaid with an attractive selection of exotic woods, is to be offered as lot 816.
With over 450 lots, the auction also includes a selection of items of Grand Tour interest, including an 18th century Italian alabaster bust of Germanicus, Oriental Furniture and Works of Art including a massive Chinese Tang House, and other furniture, clocks, works of art and collectible items from the 17th to the 21st century.
