with gilt bronze mounts, the crossbanded maple top inlaid with an oval panel depicting a sheperd with his flock within a floral ribbon tied rondel, the frieze drawer fitted with a leathe rlined slide and with a gilt metal inkwell and sander, the underside with branded initial 'E H B' for Edward Holmes Baldock

Edward Holmes Baldock (1777-1844) was a prominent London furniture dealer who numbered King George IV, William Beckford and the 5th Duke of Buccleuch as clients. He worked with cabinet makers such as George Trollope and Blake to provide Louis XV and XVI style pieces for his clients.
