engine turned, the lid inset with a silver medallion, one side with a view of York Minster, titled and dated '1829', the obverse inscribed 'York Minster was commenced 1171, completed 1377, the choir of this magnificent edifice destroyed by an incendiary Feb 2nd 1829', inscribed in pen 'The incendiary was an insane brother of Martin the great painter'

The fire, one of several in the Minster`s history, was started deliberately by a deranged man, Jonathan Martin, elder brother of the Romantic painter John Martin (1789-1854).
