Two English porcelain rouge pots, c.1810-20, one decorated with vertical stripes in orange, white and gilt, the other with gilt foliate sprigs, and a later 19th century English pottery rouge pot with original rouge, the blue paper cover inscribed 'No.18 Vegetable Rouge by A. Pears, London', a chip to the first, 5cm max. (3)
Provenance: the Judith Howard Collection.
Andrew Pears (of Pears' Soap fame) moved to London in 1790 and became concerned regarding the use of lead in cosmetics. By 1802 he was advertising cosmetics "produced from vegetables only".
