A Chamberlain's Worcester armorial tureen cover c.1830
A Chamberlain's Worcester armorial tureen cover c.1830, painted with the dual crest of Wykeham-Martin of Leeds Castle, Kent, and Chacombe Priory, Northamptonshire beneath a puce banner inscribed 'Manners Makyth Man', the rim with a wide apple green border reserved with flower sprays, gilt acorn finial, iron red Chamberlain Worcester mark, a 12mm rim chip, 22cm dia.
The service was probably produced for Fiennes Wykeham-Martin (1769-1840). Born Fiennes Wykeham, he inherited Leeds Castle from General Martin in 1821 and became High Sheriff of Kent in 1824. The family were forced to sell Leeds Castle in 1924 to cover death duties, but it is believed that much of the contents had been dispersed some decades previously to pay for the cost of repairs.
